After almost 3 weeks in foster, Nena has really come out of her shell, and it's been so much fun watching her confidence grow.
Nena is a 2-year-old sweetheart who made the journey from **Puerto Rico** to New York in search of her forever home. When she first arrived, she was shy and would often crouch when someone reached down to pet her. Now? She happily trots over to greet people, and don't be surprised if she jumps up to give you a hug! We're working on "down," but this girl is full of love and thinks everyone deserves an enthusiastic hello. She already knows **sit** and is incredibly food motivated and eager to learn, making training a joy.
Nena recently had entropion surgery to correct her eyelids, and she's feeling so much better now. By the time she's ready for adoption, she'll have her stitches out, her cone off, and will be ready to enjoy life with her forever family.
She continues to be an absolute dream in the apartment. She's been perfectly potty trained, is gentle with everyone she meets, has shown no resource guarding, and absolutely adores other dogs. She is currently living with two cats who she adores!
Nena loves toys, bones, walks, fetch, and especially being close to her people. She's just as happy curled up on the couch for a nap as she is playing with a toy or working on a food puzzle.
At night, Nena is excellent in her crate. Once she knows you're nearby, she settles right in and sleeps through the night without any issues. During the day, she has developed a little separation anxiety when crated if she sees you leaving, but she's already making progress. We've found that dog-calming music, limiting her ability to see us leave, and giving her time to settle have all helped, and we expect her confidence to continue growing as she adjusts.
More than anything, Nena is simply the sweetest dog. She wants to love and be loved, and every day she becomes a little more confident, playful, and silly. Whoever adopts her is getting an incredibly affectionate best friend with a wonderful temperament and so much potential.
Nena is approximately 2y 1m 13d old and is fully grown at 42 pounds. They are microchipped and up to date on all age-appropriate medical care. Their breed is unknown as we have not had a DNA test done.
Although our dogs are listed as unknown breed, buildings with specific dog restrictions typically enforce their rules based on what breeds a dog appears to resemble. It's always important to keep that in mind and know your building's policies before adopting a dog.

Most adult dogs do well with 30-60 minutes of walking a day plus play and sniffing time.
Ask the rescue about leash manners, elevator and stair comfort, alone-time tolerance, and whether the dog settles in a small space.
