When neighbors discovered there was a dog living alone in a seemingly vacant apartment in the building, they were shocked. Ring camera footage showed that the "owner" would visit in the middle of the night, drop a bag of food behind the door, and leave. The police were notified after there was a 6 day gap between anyone entering the apartment, but they were unable to reach the owner, and so the neighbor took things into their own hands. Fortunately, the neighbor made contact with the person, gained access to the apartment, and consent to get the dog out of this terrible situation. But they were not prepared for what they found once they opened that door. The dog, who we've named Harvey, was left alone in a one room apartment in Brooklyn for what could've been a year. Harvey has been living in the dark and filth, with no ventilation, no AC, no access to fresh water, and infrequent access to food at best. We were told the owner of the apartment even sealed the door with plastic so the smell was contained and wouldn't draw suspicion. Harvey is estimated to be 10-12 years old and is now safe at Animal Haven. Despite the terrible conditions he has lived in, he is miraculously in good shape. He does have some lumps and bumps that are being checked out that we are waiting on results for. Although he is physically in good condition for his age, he is understandably very confused and anxious. He's been through so much change in a short amount time. According to neighbors, other animals were known to be in this person's care but they were not in the apartment. We have been in contact with law enforcement to try and make sure this never happens again. We cannot share more details at this time, other than he is safe and up for adoption at Animal Haven. Harvey likes other dogs - though he can come on a bit strong since he was so deprived of contact for so long. Come visit Harvey at Animal Haven and give this sweet boy a home.
