Dixie

My name is Dixie. I am a female, black Australian Shepherd mix. I have been at the shelter since Jun 24, 2026. I'm Dixie, an 8-year-old Australian Shepherd mix, and I have recently received some VERY important news: I AM OFFICIALLY CLEARED FOR ADOPTION! ?? FINALLY. I've been waiting patiently while everyone poked me, examined me, and talked about this little growth I had on my leg. Apparently it looked concerning. So my veterinarians removed it and sent it off to be biopsied. Then we waited. And waited. And... GOOD NEWS! The results came back and it's nothing we need to worry about! Which means I can finally stop being a patient and start focusing on becoming what I actually want to be: SOMEBODY'S DOG. And I think I'm going to be pretty darn good at it. I'm a sweet, gentle, patient girl who has reached a wonderful stage of life where I know how to appreciate both sides of the dog experience. You want to go for a walk?! OH MY GOD YES. When I realize I've been chosen for walkies, my tail starts going like an absolute MAD LADY. We're going?! Outside?! Together?! THIS IS THE GREATEST DAY OF MY LIFE. I may be eight, but please don't confuse that with being finished having fun. I've got plenty of walks left in these legs and plenty of things left in this world that require a thorough sniffing. But here's where I really shine: When the walk is over? I KNOW HOW TO CHILL. We don't need to spend the next six hours scaling a mountain. Let's go home. You get comfortable on the couch. I'll get comfortable nearby. Perhaps somebody could provide me with a nice bone to chew. We can watch television. I won't understand the plot. I WILL STILL ENJOY THE EXPERIENCE. That's the kind of life I'm looking for. Walks and couch time. Adventure and relaxation. A person who's excited to see me and a home where I know I belong. I'm eight years old, and I know sometimes people walk into shelters looking for somebody younger. But I'm not looking for someone who thinks my best days are behind me. I'M LOOKING FOR SOMEONE WHO WANTS TO BE PART OF THE GOOD DAYS I STILL HAVE AHEAD. My medical waiting game is over. My tail is ready. My leash is ready. I've even got the evening plans figured out. All I'm missing is the person sitting on the other end of that couch. So...are we going for a walk or what? Dixie is spayed, dewormed, microchipped and is up to date with vaccines. Her adoption fee is $500.00, plus $8.50 for the dog license if you are a resident of NYC. Dixie will also get one free exam with one of our participating veterinarians within 30 days of his adoption.
