My name is Dusty. I am a male, tan German Shepherd Dog mix. I have been at the shelter since Aug 21, 2026. Hi, I’m Dusty! I’m an 8-year-old Shepherd mix who came to the shelter from ACC. We don't know much about what my life looked like before I got here, but we've learned one very important thing about me: I think the world is pretty scary. I'm a very sweet dog, but I'm also extremely timid. New places, unfamiliar situations, and even going for a walk can feel overwhelming to me if I don't trust that the person beside me knows what they're doing. Put an inexperienced person on the other end of my leash and I may tuck my tail, put on the brakes, and decide: NOPE. WE SHOULD DEFINITELY NOT GO THAT WAY. But something interesting happens when I'm walking with a confident handler. They give me a little encouragement, keep moving forward, and show me through their own calm confidence that there's nothing to worry about. And suddenly... I walk! Quite nicely, actually. It's tempting when you see a frightened dog like me to crouch down, shower me with reassurance, and tell me over and over that everything is okay. But what I really need is someone who can calmly show me that it's okay. Not someone mean. Not someone harsh. Someone confident. I need a person who can look at something I'm convinced is terrifying and communicate, "Nah, Dusty. We're good. Come on." And then off we go. I'm looking for an experienced dog owner who understands fearful dogs and can help me build confidence rather than accidentally reinforce my fears. With the right person guiding me, I have so much potential to discover that the world isn't nearly as frightening as I've convinced myself it is. Because of my insecurities, I should not live with small children. A quiet home with adults or older kids who understand my needs will be a much better fit. I do like other dogs! Sometimes I can come on a little strong when I'm excited to meet them, though, and not every dog appreciates my enthusiasm. Any potential canine roommates should therefore be a good personality match for me. At 8 years old, Dusty isn't looking for someone to teach him a million fancy tricks. He's looking for something much more important: Someone who can teach him how to be brave. If you're calm, confident, experienced, and willing to show a worried older gentleman that the world can actually be a pretty wonderful place, Dusty is ready to follow your lead. Dusty is neutered, dewormed, microchipped and is up to date with vaccines. His adoption fee is $500.00, plus $8.50 for the dog license if you are a resident of NYC. Dusty will also get one free exam with one of our participating veterinarians within 30 days of his adoption. If you'd like to meet him please visit, we're conveniently located in Windsor Terrace, Brooklyn near the F train (Ft Hamilton Pkwy) and the B16 bus. We're open daily for adoptions from 11am to 5:30pm. Dusty can't wait to meet you! German Shepherd

🧠 Temperament

I'm a very sweet dog, but I'm also extremely timid. Confident, highly trainable and deeply loyal, bred to work all day alongside a handler.

🎾 Exercise

New places, unfamiliar situations, and even going for a walk can feel overwhelming to me if I don't trust that the person beside me knows what…. High — 60-90+ minutes daily plus a job to do.

✂️ Grooming

Heavy double-coat shedding year-round with two big blowouts a year. Brush several times a week.

🏙️ In a NYC apartment

Put an inexperienced person on the other end of my leash and I may tuck my tail, put on the brakes, and decide: NOPE. Demanding in an apartment: large, vocal and often reactive to the constant stimulus of a city street.
