Canelo

My name is Canelo. I am a male, brown Chihuahua - Smooth Coated mix. I have been at the shelter since Jun 24, 2026. Hi, I’m Canelo! I'm Canelo, a 1½-year-old Chihuahua mix, and I'm looking for a very particular kind of relationship. I'm not interested in being mayor. I don't need seventeen best friends. I don't particularly care whether your cousin's boyfriend's roommate comes over for dinner. Honestly? I'd just like one or two good humans and a quiet life. I came to the shelter after my owner had to move somewhere that didn't allow pets. Now I'm adjusting to a completely different world and looking for someone who understands that I'm not necessarily going to love every person I meet. Some people? Great! Other people? No thank you. If I'm uncomfortable with someone, I may growl and make my feelings known. I haven't bitten anyone, but my warnings should absolutely be respected and new people should give me space rather than assuming we're going to become instant friends. For that reason, I'm looking for a child-free home with an experienced adult or two. I'd also probably prefer someone whose house isn't Grand Central Station. If you're constantly hosting parties, having friends pop over, and entertaining half the neighborhood... I'm probably not your guy. If your idea of a great evening is hanging out at home with your little dog and approximately zero unexpected visitors? Now we're talking. I also come with a couple of medical notes. I've had recurrent ear infections for quite some time. My ears recently received a clean bill of health—woohoo!—but this will likely be something that needs lifelong management. My future family should be prepared to keep up with regular ear care and work with their veterinarian if those pesky infections return. There's also a possibility that my vision isn't perfect. Sometimes I'm a little slow to react to something directly in front of me, and occasionally... bonk. I bump into something. It doesn't slow me down or stop me from enjoying life, but it's something my future family should be aware of and follow up on with their veterinarian as needed. Canelo isn't the dog for every household. And that's okay. He's looking for his household—a calm, child-free home with someone who respects his boundaries, understands that his social circle may remain delightfully tiny, and is prepared to stay on top of his medical needs. Canelo doesn't need to love everybody. He just needs to find somebody he loves. Canelo is neutered, dewormed, microchipped and is up to date with vaccines. His adoption fee is $500.00, plus $8.50 for the dog license if you are a resident of NYC. Canelo will also get one free exam with one of our participating veterinarians within 30 days of his adoption.
