My name is Huckleberry. I am a male, brown Labrador Retriever mix. I have been at the shelter since Oct 04, 2026. Hi, I’m Huckleberry! I'm Huckleberry, a 1-year-old, 30-pound Lab mix, and before you start picturing your standard Labrador... PLEASE EMPHASIZE THE "MIX." Lab? Sure. Probably. BUT THERE ARE DEFINITELY SOME OTHER INGREDIENTS IN HERE. What ingredients? Excellent question. Nobody gave me the recipe. What we do know is that I turned out awfully cute. I'm a sweet, gentle young guy who doesn't have a mean bone anywhere in my little 30-pound body. I am, however... A LITTLE SHY. I'm not necessarily going to meet you and immediately think: "OH MY GOD!!! MY NEW BEST FRIEND!!!" Some dogs operate like that. Good for them. I prefer to conduct a brief evaluation first. Who are you? Are you nice? Are you patient? Do you have snacks? IMPORTANT QUESTIONS. I need a little time to feel comfortable with new people and situations, and I'm looking for someone who won't take that personally. Please don't rush me. Don't overwhelm me. Don't expect me to become the world's most confident dog five minutes after walking through your door. Just give me time, love, patience, and consistency. Let me settle in. Let me learn your routine. Let me figure out that I'm safe. Let me discover that you're somebody I can trust. And then? WATCH ME BLOOM. I'm only one year old. I've got my entire adult life ahead of me, and underneath this slightly timid exterior is a really wonderful little dog just waiting to feel secure enough to shine. I'm sweet. I'm young. I'm an extremely convenient 30 pounds. I'm ridiculously cute. And I have absolutely no interest in causing anybody trouble. I just need someone who looks at a shy dog and doesn't think: "What's wrong with him?" But instead thinks: "That's okay, buddy. We've got time." Because we do. And once I realize that I'm finally home? I have a feeling I'm going to make somebody really, really happy. I'm Huckleberry. Lab-ish. Mix-ish. Definitely adorable. And 100% ready for someone to believe in me. Huckleberry is neutered, dewormed, microchipped and is up to date with vaccines. His adoption fee is $500.00, plus $8.50 for the dog license if you are a resident of NYC. Huckleberry will also get one free exam with one of our participating veterinarians within 30 days of his adoption. If you'd like to meet him please visit, we're conveniently located in Windsor Terrace, Brooklyn near the F train (Ft Hamilton Pkwy) and the B16 bus. We're open daily for adoptions from 11am to 5:30pm. Huckleberry can't wait to meet you! 🧠 Temperament
I'm a sweet, gentle young guy who doesn't have a mean bone anywhere in my little 30-pound body. Friendly, people-focused and famously food-motivated, which makes training straightforward.
🎾 Exercise
High needs — 60-90 minutes daily. Labs love retrieving and swimming, and an under-exercised Lab tends to get mouthy and destructive.
✂️ Grooming
Short double coat that sheds heavily year-round and more in spring and fall. Weekly brushing helps a lot.
🏙️ In a NYC apartment
Can do well in an apartment if genuinely exercised. Size and shedding are the main constraints; most are elevator- and crowd-tolerant.
