Mallow - 8 years, 34lbs, Beagle, Neutered This senior angel is eligible to join our foster-to-adopt program. Please email fostertoadopt@socialteesnyc.org with the animal’s name in the subject line if you are interested! Want to straight up adopt? Submit an adoption application at socialteesnyc.org Their foster says: "Mallow is an absolute joy—a sweet, affectionate beagle who loves walks, sniffing, meeting new people, receiving belly rubs, cuddling in your arms, and eating his favorite high-value treat: boiled chicken. Prince Mallow is a true extrovert, and everyone who meets him quickly falls in love with him. He enjoys independent time and handles being left alone for a few hours quite well. He is also very interested in mirrors and loves to stare out the window and watch the people outside! When he comes home, he quickly falls asleep and snores like a good pup! Indoors, Mallow finds chew toys comforting, but his absolute favorite inside activity is his snuffle mat; I would recommend incorporating more scent games and enrichment activities for him." Level of dog ownership experience needed: FLEXIBLE – We predict this dog will be low on the challenge scale with regard to exercise and mental stimulation requirements, but seniors tend to need a lot of help and understanding when it comes to lifestyle and veterinary issues. Seniors usually need quiet, calm environments and routines and do not do well with a lot of bustle, change, and rambunctious movement (kids and young playful dogs, for instance). This dog’s adopter will need to be prepared for senior health challenges, which means frequent vet visits and very expensive veterinary bills. (An annual senior blood panel alone costs around $500 in NYC.) Senior care can also take an emotional toll on their humans. Adopting a mature pup is a wonderful thing to do, but it can also be difficult. Energy level: Medium – Mallow loves to walk and needs a home where he has plenty of opportunities to sniff. He is big on "beagling"--catching scents and forgetting everything else. We are currently working on his pulling, so he will need someone patient who takes him on sniff walks. He needs a good balance of mental stimulation and a solid 60 min walk in the morning. Taking Mallow out for a longer morning walk is really helpful so he can get his sniffs in first thing, but since he loves being outside, we try to take him on any other short neighborhood walks too. He's not hyper when he's inside though and settles into napping and snuggling, but if there's an opportuntiy for him to go out and sniff anything, even if it's just for a block, he wants to join! Okay in the city? Adjusting to the city – This is Mallow's first time in the city. When Mallow first arrived in the city, everything was new and overwhelming. He took some time to adjust to loud noises and stairs, but he is a resilient learner. He is currently making great progress on elevator practice, fully walking inside on his own! He's not completely unfazed, but generally does very well. He's been on the subway (during off peak hours) and did great. Potty trained? Yes – No accidents so far! His foster has a backyard that they let him explore, but he seems to prefer going potty on a walk/leash. Comfort level with strangers: Social butterfly – Mallow loves meeting new people. He loves saying hello to everyone he meets, so we are currently working on recall during walks so he isn't so distracted. Social with other dogs? He is definitely more focused on sniffing, but always wants to say hi to other dogs. His foster notes, "He loves to say hi to all dogs on the street of all sizes and ages and gets along with our senior dog." Social with cats? Probably. Seniors are usually mellow enough that they are able to coexist well with cats. Respectful behavior with other animals (cats, small pets, etc.): Not sure – Wants to chase squirrels and birds so may not be a good match for a home with cats, rabbits, etc. Comfortable with children?
🧠 Temperament
His foster notes, "He loves to say hi to all dogs on the street of all sizes and ages and gets along with our senior dog." Social with cats?. Cheerful, sociable and governed almost entirely by their nose.
🎾 Exercise
Energy level: Medium – Mallow loves to walk and needs a home where he has plenty of opportunities to sniff. Moderate — 45-60 minutes with plenty of sniffing.
✂️ Grooming
Short coat, easy, sheds moderately.
🏙️ In a NYC apartment
His foster has a backyard that they let him explore, but he seems to prefer going potty on a walk/leash. Good size for an apartment; the baying voice is the thing to check with neighbors.
