Starfruit - 1 year, 23lbs, Kelpie/Aussie Mix, Spayed Our Team Says: "Starfruit is best in a home in a calmer part of the city, she's slowy adjusting but would like a calmer part best or beyond." This dog is eligible to join our foster-to-adopt program. Please email fostertoadopt@socialteesnyc.org with the animal’s name in the subject line if you are interested! Want to straight up adopt? Submit an adoption application at socialteesnyc.org Their Foster Family Says: "Starfruit (Starzy) is a little fox still figuring out the big city. She's a quick learner, so she's adjusting, but it's still a work in progress! She is VERY snuggly and energetic indoors, either sleeping by your side or chewing on a toy/bone when you are home with her. Outdoors, she's quick to use the bathroom but is still getting her city legs and can be a bit stop and go if she gets spooked by people or noises. She's very treat motivated though and will resume walking with some coaxing! She has already learned a few commands (smart girl!). I think she would be happiest in a quieter spot in the city because I can tell she has more energy than she displays when outside because of her nervousness. She's generally on the more reserved side with new people, but once she gets to know you, she is a fireball, running around playing fetch with her toys, or jumping into your lap for face kisses. She is the cutest girl in the world and continues to open up more each day. I'm confident that she will absolutely thrive in the right forever home willing to be patient with her (it's 100% worth it for the face kisses and snuggles)!" Level of dog ownership experience required: INTERMEDIATE – This dog will need significant structure and plenty of daily exercise, training, and mental stimulation – 90 consecutive minutes of movement in the morning plus potty break walks and brain games throughout the day. The adopter must have relevant primary care experience with a similar breed, temperament, and/or energy level. (Primary care experience includes ownership, fostering, or dog sitting as an adult, not a dog you grew up with.) Energy Level: MEDIUM – Needs a daily 60-90 minute walk or window of quick paced exercise (minimum) in addition to potty break strolls (10-30 min each). Also needs significant socializing opportunities outside the home and mental stimulation at home like tricks training practice, chew items, and puzzle toys. (This is regardless of dog size – many small breeds were designed for lots of activity and will exhibit unwanted behavior when they’re understimulated.) TOLERANCE TO CITY Adjusting to city- she's getting better every day but still gets nervous or freezes with loud noise or crowds. Usually needs to be toted to the nearby park and then walks okay once there (but she's getting better about being able to walk home on her own!) POTTY TRAINING Yes- few accidents first few days but to be expected! COMFORT LEVEL WITH STRANGERS In between bean BEHAVIOR WITH CHILDREN Maybe for age 12 and up- skittish with loud noise and sudden movement, but once she is comfortable with you, she is pretty energetic and jumpy which wouldn't be great for small kids SOCIAL BEHAVIOR WITH OTHER DOGS Yes- caveat that she is generally not very interested because of being on the skittish side RESPECTFUL BEHAVIOR WITH OTHER ANIMALS Yes- she hasn't interacted with other animals but does not show interest in birds on the street MOUTHY BEHAVIOR Working on it- nibbles on hands (responds to correction), and will chew things she is not supposed to if you leave them out. definitely requires puppy proofing of the home! no furniture or anything major, just clothes or the occasional shoe SEPARATION ANXIETY Adjusting- may cry or pace a little but generally fine being home alone for hours at a time LEASH MANNERS WTF is a leash- 100% has never been on a leash before, the first time she went out she was SO confused by it lol. She's getting better but we're focusing on being able to walk genera

Shepherd

🧠 Temperament

She has already learned a few commands (smart girl!). Herding-type dogs are typically bright, biddable and attentive to their person, with a tendency to be watchful and sometimes reactive to fast movement.

🎾 Exercise

She's generally on the more reserved side with new people, but once she gets to know you, she is a fireball, running around playing fetch with her…. High — 60+ minutes plus mental work.

✂️ Grooming

Usually a double coat with regular shedding; brush weekly or more.
