Meet Almond Joy, a.k.a. AJ: a little bit of this, a dash of that, and a whole lot of sweet. 🍫🥥 AJ is a 4-year-old, 18-pound, small mixed breed whose ancestry is a true mystery. She’s a real Heinz 57, with the tri-color coat of a spaniel, with a white bib and a white sock, and the expressive eyebrows of a Rottweiler. We don’t know what’s in the mix, but we know the result is adorable. 🐾 A slow burn, worth the wait AJ is shy, timid, and anxious, and she needs time to trust. She’s the kind of dog who warms up quietly and gets sweeter the more safe she feels. With continued decompression, we expect her to keep opening up. 🩵 On leash: She walks relatively well, though she may pull a little. She’s food motivated and eager to be obedient, so treats go a long way. Crate: She appears to be crate trained, or at least finds comfort in taking extended breaks in her crate. She has not demonstrated separation anxiety. Other dogs: In her current foster home, she isn’t really vibing with the resident female dog, so we’re looking for a new placement where she can be more comfortable. Outside of the home or on-leash, she is not reactive to other dogs, regardless of size. What AJ needs A quiet, low-traffic home. Because she’s fearful and could be defensive when stressed, she isn’t a good fit for a household with heavy foot traffic. No small children. She needs a calm, predictable environment. Patience and consistency. A foster or adopter who lets her set the pace and builds trust with routine, treats, and gentle encouragement. We pulled AJ from Manhattan Animal Care Centers of NYC as a New Hope Partner. Shortly before placement, she was diagnosed with kennel cough. Her symptoms are very mild (a little nasal discharge and some lethargy), and she’s finishing about a week of oral medication before her spay can be scheduled. AJ is a sweetheart who’s still finding her confidence. The right person will get to watch it bloom. Vaccinated for rabies, DHPP, and bordetella, heartworm negative, and microchipped. Current on flea, tick, and heartworm prevention. Spay surgery to be scheduled once recovered from kennel cough. To apply for AJ, visit our website (www.waggytailrescue.org) for an adoption application. It is important to fill out an application as soon as possible for consideration, and we require a complete application for you to meet an animal. We are currently unable to respond to general email inquiries as an all-volunteer run rescue. If the dog is on our website, they are still available. Waggytail Rescue CANNOT guarantee the exact age of any adoptable dog, or final size of any of our adoptable puppies. We rely on the information provided to us by veterinarians, shelters, owner surrenders and other circumstances bringing the dog into our rescue. Adoptions: adopt@waggytailrescue.org

Mixed Breed

🧠 Temperament

🐾 A slow burn, worth the wait AJ is shy, timid, and anxious, and she needs time to trust. Mixed-breed dogs pull traits from several lines, which often means fewer breed-linked health problems and a temperament best judged by meeting the dog.

🎾 Exercise

🩵 On leash: She walks relatively well, though she may pull a little. Depends on the individual.

✂️ Grooming

She’s a real Heinz 57, with the tri-color coat of a spaniel, with a white bib and a white sock, and the expressive eyebrows of a Rottweiler. Varies with coat type.
