A NYC estimate for a dog this size and coat. Excludes the adoption fee and anything unexpected.
Fully grown. This breed typically settles around 32–45 lbs.
My name is Duke. I am a male, black Border Collie mix. I have been at the shelter since Sep 12, 2026. Hi, I’m Duke! I'm Duke, a 3-year-old...Um. DOG. Definitely a dog. Beyond that, your guess is as good as mine. Some people look at me and say: "Border Collie!" Other people say: "Flat-Coated Retriever!" Someone else inevitably walks by and says: "There's gotta be some Shepherd in there." And I say: "COOL. ARE WE GOING OUTSIDE OR WHAT?" We may never solve the Great Duke Genetic Mystery. What we DO know is that I'm extremely cute, wonderfully sweet, very happy... and... HIGH. ENERGY. Please notice the period between those words. It is there for emphasis. I NEED TO MOVE. If your idea of owning a dog is opening the back door once in a while and then spending the remainder of the day together on the couch... I respect you. I wish you well. PLEASE SELECT ANOTHER DOG. I need real exercise. Walks. Adventures. Things to do. Places to go. Ways to use my brain AND my body. And just as importantly? I NEED STRUCTURE. Because I have opinions. Sometimes those opinions come out as: BARK BARK BARK BARK BARK. What am I barking at? Excellent question. Sometimes there is an obvious answer. Sometimes there is not. Perhaps I heard something. Perhaps I saw something. Perhaps the wind moved suspiciously. I WILL BE INVESTIGATING. Now, you could let me bark at whatever I want whenever I want. You could laugh and say: "Oh Duke! You're so silly!" You could let me make all my own rules. And do you know what would happen? I WOULD GET REALLY GOOD AT BEING ANNOYING. Practice makes perfect, guys. That's why I need someone who's willing to train me, give me boundaries, and consistently show me what behavior is expected. Not someone mean. Not someone harsh. Someone who understands that dogs don't magically arrive knowing how humans want them to behave. YOU HAVE TO TEACH US. I'm already a really nice dog. I'm sweet. I'm happy. I'm fun. I've got loads of personality. But being a nice dog and being a well-behaved dog aren't automatically the same thing. That's where you come in. Exercise me. Train me. Give me structure. Be consistent. Give this big mystery brain something productive to do. And THEN? Absolutely. Let's collapse on the couch together. I WILL HAVE EARNED IT. I'm Duke. Put in the work... AND I'M GOING TO BE ONE AWESOME DOG. Duke is neutered, dewormed, microchipped and is up to date with vaccines. His adoption fee is $500.00, plus $8.50 for the dog license if you are a resident of NYC. Duke will also get one free exam with one of our participating veterinarians within 30 days of his adoption. If you'd like to meet him please visit, we're conveniently located in Windsor Terrace, Brooklyn near the F train (Ft Hamilton Pkwy) and the B16 bus. We're open daily for adoptions from 11am to 5:30pm. Duke can't wait to meet you! 🧠 Temperament
I've got loads of personality. Widely considered the most intelligent breed, and that is a demand rather than a convenience.
🎾 Exercise
Some people look at me and say: "Border Collie!" Other people say: "Flat-Coated Retriever!" Someone else inevitably walks by and says: "There's gotta…. Very high — 90+ minutes plus daily mental work or a dog sport.
✂️ Grooming
Medium double coat, brush a few times a week.
🏙️ In a NYC apartment
Sometimes those opinions come out as: BARK BARK BARK BARK BARK. A difficult apartment fit unless you are committed to serious daily activity.
