My name is Joy. I am a female, white American Pit Bull Terrier mix. I have been at the shelter since Oct 14, 2026. Hi, I’m Joy! 9 Months Old • Pit Bull • Former Bed-Rest Patient • Current Enthusiasm Department I'm Joy! I'm a 9-month-old Pit Bull, and I have an announcement. A very important announcement. One that I have been waiting WEEKS to make. I AM OFF BED REST AND READY TO PARTY!!! Okay. Maybe not party exactly. But RUN? PLAY? GO PLACES? DO THINGS?! YES. YES. YES. YES. Let me explain. I was found running around Chinatown in Manhattan, minding my own business. Well… someone brought me to the shelter, where the staff noticed something wasn't quite right. I was limping on one of my back legs. So off to the vet I went! X-rays showed that I had an old spiral fracture that had already started healing before I was rescued. Unfortunately, the bone hadn't lined up quite the way it should have. Two specialists were consulted, and after reviewing my situation, the veterinary team decided that trying to fix the partially healed fracture wasn't the right option. Instead, I needed something much, MUCH more difficult. STRICT CAGE REST. For several weeks. SEVERAL. WEEKS. Guys. I am a NINE-MONTH-OLD PIT BULL. Do you have ANY IDEA how much energy I have?! And they wanted me to... LIE DOWN?! FOR WEEKS?! I would like everyone to know that this was an extremely challenging period in my professional career. But I did it! I rested. I healed. I waited. And now? I AM CLEARED AND READY FOR MY NEXT ADVENTURE! My back leg will always look a little wonky because the fracture didn't heal in perfect alignment. But guess what? IT WORKS! I get around wonderfully, and I'm not letting a slightly unusual-looking leg stop me from enjoying life. I've got three regular-looking legs and one with a little extra personality. IT MATCHES THE REST OF ME. And speaking of personality... I HAVE A LOT OF IT. I'm sweet! I'm happy! I'm enthusiastic! I'm full of love! And I have... SO. MUCH. ENERGY. Seriously. I am not a couch potato. I am not a decorative throw pillow. I am not looking for someone whose idea of exercise is walking from the refrigerator to the sofa. I want an ACTIVE HOME! I want appropriate exercise! I want games! I want mental stimulation! I want training! I want things to DO! And most importantly, I need somebody who understands that being a sweet dog and being an easy dog are NOT THE SAME THING. Because I am VERY sweet. But I'm also a young, energetic Pit Bull who needs structure, consistency, boundaries, and positive training to help me become the wonderful adult dog I have the potential to be. I have enthusiasm. I have determination. I have approximately seventeen ideas per second. WHAT I NEED IS SOMEONE TO HELP ME ORGANIZE THEM. And because I'm such an energetic, bouncy girl, the shelter isn't recommending me for homes with very young children. Nothing against little kids! But I have a lot of excitement packed into this body, and I need a household that's prepared to handle it. I'm looking for people who are active, experienced enough to guide a high-energy young dog, and committed to helping me develop good manners. I'm Joy. I survived life on the streets. I survived a broken leg. I survived weeks of cage rest. And now I'm ready for the best thing that's ever happened to me. A FAMILY OF MY OWN. Joy is spayed, dewormed, microchipped and is up to date with vaccines. Her adoption fee is $500, plus $8.50 for the dog license if you are a resident of NYC. Joy will also get one free exam with one of our participating veterinarians within 30 days of his adoption. If you'd like to meet her please visit, we're conveniently located in Windsor Terrace, Brooklyn near the F train (Ft Hamilton Pkwy) and the B16 bus. We're open daily for adoptions from 11am to 5:30pm. Joy can't wait to meet you! American Pit Bull Terrier

🧠 Temperament

I've got three regular-looking legs and one with a little extra personality. Affectionate, people-loving and often startlingly goofy — pit bull type dogs are typically very social with humans.

🎾 Exercise

I'm looking for people who are active, experienced enough to guide a high-energy young dog, and committed to helping me develop good manners. High — 60+ minutes daily plus chew and puzzle outlets.

✂️ Grooming

Very easy. Short coat, minimal shedding, thin coat means a winter jacket.

🏙️ In a NYC apartment

The main obstacle is paperwork, not the dog: many buildings and insurers restrict pit bull type dogs, and enforcement is based on appearance. Confirm your building's policy first.
