Submit an adoption application at socialteesnyc.org Our Team Says: "Sorrel would do best in a calm area. She's still working on her confidence outdoors. She wouldn't say no to a home in the burbs or beyond." Thier Foster Parent Says: "Sorrel is literally a tiny baby Living in a big, very scary world. At a whopping 9 pounds, she has decided that the safest place to be is… directly on your skin. If you’re sitting down, congratulations!!! you now have a chiweenie dog attached to you. She LOVESSSSS salmon skin treats. Like, LOVES THEM. She will absolutely bark at you for more because apparently 47 treats is never enough. She’s also learning how to sit, which is a BIG deal because, as everyone knows, chiweenie dogs have approximately zero interest in taking orders. She’s doing great and slowly realizing that listening = snacks. Outside, Sorrel is still a scaredy baby. Going out to potty is a whole production because literally EVERYTHING is terrifying. A leaf? Scary. A noise? SCARY. A person existing nearby? CALL 911. She’s only 9 pounds, so the world is understandably HUGE to her. With patience, reassurance, and someone willing to let her take things at her own pace, she’s learning that outside isn’t so scary after all. Sorrel is crate trained and has discovered that her bed is her little safe space. When she wants peace and quiet, she knows exactly where to go. She isn’t super toy motivated yet and would much rather play with you than a squeaky toy, but who knows, maybe her inner toy gremlin is still loading. She currently has two foster sisters: one around her tiny size and one big potato. She absolutely loves snuggling with them when she’s in the mood, but Sorrel is also very good at communicating when she’s had enough. She’ll happily cuddle… until she doesn't, and then she will politely let you know that your services are no longer required. Sorrel is looking for someone who understands that she’s still a baby, who will give her time to build confidence, and who doesn’t mind having a 9 pound personal shadow following them around." Level of dog ownership experience required: BEGINNER – “Beginner” doesn’t necessarily mean easy as all dogs will require time, work, and patience, but we predict this dog will be low on the challenge scale because of their breed/age combo. Potentially a good fit for someone who has relevant dog care experience (fostering, dog sitting) and is looking to adopt their first pup. Energy level: MEDIUM – Needs a daily 60 minute walk or window of quick paced exercise (minimum) in addition to potty break strolls (10-30 min each). Also needs significant socializing opportunities outside the home and mental stimulation at home like tricks training practice, chew items, and puzzle toys. (This is regardless of dog size – many small breeds were designed for lots of activity and will exhibit unwanted behavior when they’re understimulated.) TOLERANCE TO CITY Adjusting to the city – Spooked easily by loud noises and bustling areas but walks pretty well in quiet areas and probably just needs more time to adjust (may be a puppy or a brand new rescue). Would prefer a home in a calmer part of the city or the suburbs. POTTY TRAINING Yes – Few or no accidents COMFORT LEVEL WITH STRANGERS Wallflower – Very shy with new people and takes a while to warm up. Afraid when unfamiliar people try to say hi on the street, hides or shrinks back when new people visit the home. SOCIAL BEHAVIOR WITH OTHER DOGS Good with other dogs – Generally good with other dogs but may be selective (scared of big dogs or plays too rough for small dogs, for example). Currently living with two dogs :) RESPECTFUL BEHAVIOR WITH OTHER ANIMALS (cats, small pets, etc.) Yes – Seems to get along with cats e
🧠 Temperament
SOCIAL BEHAVIOR WITH OTHER DOGS Good with other dogs – Generally good with other dogs but may be selective (scared of big dogs or plays too rough for…. Bold and deeply bonded to one or two people.
🎾 Exercise
Energy level: MEDIUM – Needs a daily 60 minute walk or window of quick paced exercise (minimum) in addition to potty break strolls (10-30 min each). Low — short walks and indoor play are plenty.
✂️ Grooming
Easy for both smooth and long coats. Dental care is the real priority; small breeds are prone to tooth disease.
🏙️ In a NYC apartment
She will absolutely bark at you for more because apparently 47 treats is never enough. Extremely apartment-friendly and easy to carry on the subway.
